Fiber components withstand harsh outside plant environments

APA Cables & Networks (APACN) announced a line of fiber connectivity products that can withstand harsh environmental conditions commonly found in outside plant applications.

The company's Tough Guy Termination Platform consists of singlemode simplex patchcords, OSP splitter modules, and pre-terminated OSP assemblies up to 24 fibers.

The Tough Guy Termination Platform uses fiber components introduced earlier this year for military environments by Optical Cable Corp. (OCC) and enhances it for use in various fiber constructions ranging from loose tube, outside plant to ribbon. The cable, developed for this application to APACN's specifications, incorporates an extra 500?m secondary coating and polyurethane outer jacketing material. This construction introduces a barrier between the fiber and environmental conditions while ensuring a flexible cable to prevent microbends during cold temperatures and sagging during excessive heat.

"The 500?m coating is a tertiary process between the 250?m (secondary) and outside jacket material. While bend-insensitive glass is not be used in this construction today, the 500?m acrylate gives the product enhanced crush resistance and better bend insensitivity. The outside jacket is made up of polyurethane materials that offer superior handling characteristics over traditional riser rated jackets," according to the company.

The material will maintain its flexibility down to -55C whereas traditional materials become stiff and memory intensive at low temperatures, said the company. In addition, the cable exhibits anti-sagging properties in high temperature environments.

Expect to pay about a 10 percent premium for the improved splitters versus splitters using traditional riser rated materials, and about a 5 to 10 percent premium for patchcords and pre-terminated OSP assemblies.
