The worldwide market for digital radio receivers was 5 million units in 2005 and will grow to 25 million unit shipments in 2010, according to market research company In-Stat.

"Overall, digital radio is still an emerging market. Opportunities abound for retailers, broadcasters, automobile OEMs, and receiver manufacturers alike," said Stephanie Ethier, an analyst with In-Stat in a statement.

Ethier said the growth would be stimulated by falling receiver prices, increased digital programming, a boost in promotion and advertising of digital radio, and enhanced functionality of digital radio receivers.

In the satellite digital radio area XM was expected to hit 8 million subscribers, and Sirius 6.3 million subscribers, by the end of 2006. In Europe, primarily the United Kingdom, digital audio broadcasting is the pervasive form of radio, with DAB radio receiver shipments set to outpace analog radio receiver shipments in 2007.
