Ford, Microsoft offer Sync system for cars

Ford Motor Co. and Microsoft Corp. aim to bring computer connectivity to cars via the Sync system, a voice-operated dashboard device unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Using Bluetooth technology, the system allows drivers to make handsfree phone calls, listen to music on digital media players, including Apple' s iPod, as well as have cellphone text messages read aloud.

"Sync is what today's generation and today's drivers demand in connectivity," said Derrick Kuzak, group VP at Ford.

Microsoft senior product manager Velle Kolde said the company saw an opportunity to put its software in over 600 million cars worldwide.

Ford will offer the Sync feature on 12 of its 2008 models, and later will be available in all Ford, Lincoln and Mercury models.
