SMK Corp. has announced the development of an IR remote-control transmission/reception unit for PCs running on Microsoft Windows Vista.

This Windows Vista-compatible IR transmission/reception remote controlled unit is composed of an IR remote control transmitter, a USB transceiver, a USB receiver and an IR blaster (extension cable with a transmission section).

The major feature of the IR remote control unit (transmitter) is a start button for the Windows Vista Media Center function specified by Microsoft for ease in switching to TV, video or DVD. The USB transceiver has a learning function for remote control signals used in the home. This enables users to call such signals so that other in-home equipment such as an STB can be controlled via the IR blaster through a Windows Vista PC. Moreover, an indicator LED on the IR blaster makes it easy to confirm an IR transmission.

The IR remote control device has external dimensions of 210-by-50-by-25.2mm. It has an operating voltage range of 2.2-3.3Vdc and operates from 3Vdc (two AA cells). It has a sensing distance of 7m. The USB transceiver has external dimensions of 64.5-by-49-by-20mm and a cable length of 2m. It has a 5Vdc supply (from a USB interface) and a USB full-speed interface. Its range of learnable carrier frequency is 32-56KHz. The IR blaster has a cable length of 5m and an IR ray length of 940m.

Sample and production shipments of this Vista-compatible IR remote control unit started this month. Sample price is $82.91 per set.
