Korea's Dongbu Electronics has started volume production of 8-inch CMOS wafers of LCD driver ICs (LDIs) for Silicon Works Co. Ltd, a supplier of display driver IC (DDI) solutions.

"While it typically takes more than a year to develop a wafer process technology to implement LDIs for a specific customer, we've successfully collaborated with Silicon Works to perform this task in just seven months," said Jae Song, executive VP of Dongbu. "Moreover, we have maintained 97 percent yield, which is up to 7 percent higher than yields attained by competitive foundries."

Dongbu will have an initial production capacity of 6,000-7,000 wafers, which is expected to ramp over time. The LDIs will be used in 17-inch to 19-inch LCDs, LCD-wide displays and notebook computer panels from LG Philips LCD.

Dongbu seeks to expand its LDI wafer processing for Silicon Works this second quarter by implementing LDIs designed for 34-inch to 43-inch LCDs.
