ARF2496K transceiver RFIC from AlfaPlus

AlfaPlus Semiconductor Inc. has launched the ARF2496K, a 2.4GHz transceiver RFIC. The ultralow-power RFIC operates in the unlicensed ISM band and targets the wireless HID and wireless VoIP markets.

Fabricated in the 0.18?m CMOS process, this transceiver employs GFSK technology for less interference from other devices and for multiple users in the same environment, and programmable frequency synthesizer for multichannel capability. The PLL lock time of less than 200?s makes frequency hopping viable, hence providing a solution to coexistence issues.

On-chip packet encapsulation
Features such as digital and analog RSSI, image rejection, CDR and data scrambler also reduce system design efforts. On-chip packet encapsulation (preamble, destination address, scrambled data, burst count, source address and CRC) also off loads the job from MCU, and a lower-loading and lower-cost MCU would reduce the BOM cost and firmware design complexity.

Given the typical operating current of no more than 18mA in receiver mode and 13mA at 0dBm in transmitter mode, and a power-saving mode with no more than 1?A consumption, the device could reduce the averaging current consumption and the MCU load, making it suitable for wireless portable applications. The supply voltage of 1.9V~3.6V would also help drain the battery capacity to the last minute. A well-designed wireless mouse thus could have a typical battery life of more than one year.

Few external parts
Requiring only a few external components and with the programmable output power level up to 0dBm and a sensitivity of -85dBm at 1Mbps and -93dBm at 250Kbps, the ARF2496K transceiver RFIC enables cost-effective, low-power consumption, multichannel and easy-to-implement 2-way wireless communication links, thereby reducing R&D schedules, expenses and uncertainties while accelerating time to market for wireless applications.

Designed for compliance to EMI regulations worldwide, ARF2496K has already been pre-tested and verified with a reference design module board, together with all the design base (including schematics, PCB layout and BOM) would help provide a solid jumpstart to any potential customers.

The ARF2496K is housed in a 4-by-4mm, QFN24 package. This small size package makes the module board compact and slim, fit for today's portable design.
