From $613.7 million this year, revenues associated with VoIP ICs will reach $2.63 billion by 2010, according to In-Stat's report VoIP Chips: Preparing for a Wireless Multimedia Future.

The VoIP IC market is growing and is shifting as consumer offerings expand, reported In-Stat. Wireless and video apps will play critical roles for the segment in the following years and will present new challenges for chip-level players.

At present, VoIP chip revenues attributed to IP phones sum up to less than 1 percent. However, this segment is projected to leapfrog growth close to 60 percent of total segment sales by 2010.

"Tomorrow's IP phones and the semiconductors used to produce them will clearly be very different from today's business-oriented sets," said Norm Bogen, In-Stat analyst. "New forms of interconnection at both the edge and the core ultimately mean VoIP chips will disappear at the network level, as VoIP fulfils the prophecy that someday it will be simply another application on an IP network."

Infrastructure revenues associated with VoIP chips will consist 13.6 percent of total revenues in 2010, added In-Stat.
