SiliconSystems Inc. extended its SiliconDrive product line with a 1.8-inch form factor. Available in capacities up to 16Gbytes, the new smaller form factor SiliconDrive is aimed at size- and weight-constrained applications such as tablet and notebook PCs, in-flight applications and portable medical devices.

Designed as a replacement for hard drives and flash cards, SiliconDrives in the 1.8-inch form factor maintain all of the company's advanced storage technologies such as PowerArmor and SiSMART that are integrated into existing SiliconDrive form factors. These advanced technologies are said to eliminate field failures from power disturbances, prevent product requalifications and provide enhanced security to protect application data and software IP. The device is RoHS 5/6 compliant. Click the link for the SiliconDrive datasheet.

The company says applications that have historically been forced to use 2.5-inch form factor hard drives now have a smaller, lighter package alternative. In addition, the drives are engineered to meet the high-reliability and multi-year lifecycle requirements of enterprise system OEM applications.

The 16Gbyte SiliconDrive is priced at about $450 in OEM quantities.
