Raza Microelectronics Inc. (RMI) has announced two products for next-generation multifunction portable media players (mPMP) and other consumer applications. The Au1210 and Au1250 are both aimed at power reduction while maintaining pin and software compatibility.

RMI's Alchemy Au1250 media processor extends the strengths of the existing Alchemy processors into a broad range of digital media applications. Au1250 is pin- and software-compatible with existing Au1200 sockets and promises increased performance while improving its power-optimized features associated with the Alchemy processor family. The Au1250 also provides full D1 (720 x 480) video resolution with MPEG 1, 2, 4wmv9, DivX and Xvid. The SoC architecture allows system designers the ability to implement full featured PMPs using the Alchemy processors without the need for additional components.

Longer battery lifeThis elevated application processing performance with remarkably low power allows the Au1250 processor to meet the expanding needs of mPMP. The device combines increased performance up to 600MHz, with power reductions of more than 30 percent (active power) and 60 percent (inactive power), compared to existing Au1200-based systems. Users can now enjoy the ability to simultaneously run multiple diverse applications with substantially longer battery life than before.

The Alchemy Au1210 navigation processor is optimized for portable navigation devices and for single-purpose media applications. The device is pin- and software-compatible with the Au1200, the current media processing solution from RMI, and the new Au1250.

Au1210 operates at frequencies up to 400MHz and supports video decode up to Wide-CIF (480 x 288) resolution. This targeted functionality enables customers to address cost-sensitive applications such as GPS navigation, where full D1 video resolution is not required.

Rich multimedia experienceThe RMI Alchemy family consists of pin-compatible media and navigation SoCs enabling designers to support multiple price-performance points and application requirements from a single board design. The processor of choice for full-featured PMP, mPMP, navigation and mobile TV devices, the Alchemy family is made up of high-performance, low-power processors capable of delivering a rich multimedia experience to end users. The Alchemy family of processors gives system designers an easy-to-use, simple solution to create full-featured portable solutions with reduced design cycle times. The SoC architecture integrates most peripheral components resulting in a significant reduction in total BOM.

The Au1210 and Au1250 will be sampling at the end of Q1 2007. Volume production is scheduled for Q2 2007. Pricing is available upon request.
