Embedded applications increasingly require sophisticated data management capabilities, yet most embedded designers have little familiarity with the underlying concepts. Seeking to educate designers and seed a potential new marketplace, Encirq Corp. this week will announce a free downloadable version of its DeviceSQL software development framework, along with tutorial materials.

DeviceSQL is a software development framework for designing and implementing the data management portions of device software applications. It can build a database, a local search engine or any other functions for manipulating, processing and managing data, Encirq said. Its components include the DeviceSQL programming language, development and prototyping tools, starter applications and service libraries.

The new DeviceSQL Quick Start Suite combines a free Windows-based version of the framework along with exercises and demonstration code. With a couple of exceptions, it provides all the capabilities of the commercial DeviceSQL product, said Jan Liband, director of product marketing at Encirq. To deploy the framework in a product, however, a designer or company will need to license DeviceSQL. Encirq provides a per-user development license, a platform license and a production license that scales with the end cost of the product.

"Rather than putting out a little evaluation kit or a 30- or 90-day type of thing, we're putting the whole Windows development environment out there, so users can download it and learn more about device data management," Liband said. "It's not just a test drive. People can really start building stuff and proving to themselves that this can solve problems."

Closing the educational gap
Encirq is thus hoping to close a big educational gap. Liband said that less than 10 percent of the embedded designers his company speaks to have experience with data management techniques or databases. And yet, he noted, the complexity of data in embedded devices "has just exploded" in recent years, driving the need for sophisticated data management.

The Quick Start Suite provides most of the capabilities of the commercial version of the framework, Liband said, including the language, compiler, prototyper and run-time environment for Windows hosts (not an environment embedded designers would typically stay with for production releases). A device data management "primer" includes an interactive tutorial, backed up with live examples and demo code. The package also includes the open-source MinGW C compiler. What's not included is DeviceSQL Builder, a graphical tool recently added to the commercial version, and tutorials for starter apps.

The DeviceSQL Quick Start Suite is available at Encirq's Website.
