Samsung bets on WiMAX as future tech

Samsung made its case for mobile WiMAX as the future of wireless at its second annual Mobile Summit in New York City last December.

"4G is WiMAX. We're very clear about that," said Philip Garrison, mobile strategist for Samsung Telecommunications America (STA).

In a speech, Dale Sohn, president of STA, spoke of the company's mantrathe world in your handsreferring to the ability to communicate anytime, anywhere and with anyone. "We're on a journey to mobile multimedia computing," said Garrison.

While the company sees mobile WiMAX as the future, in the near term, mobility and connectivity will come through a variety of wireless interfaces, including EVDO Rev A, HSDPA and HSUPA, MobileTV, satellite broadcasts and dual-mode Wi-Fi/cellular phones. "MediaFlo will be big next year," said Garrison.

The authenticity of Samsung's prediction is underscored by the fact that it has few axes to grind: it develops a broad range of wireless technologies, including GSM, GPRS and Edge as well as the 3G IMT2000 CDMA-based variants.

Mobile WiMAX has many benefits, said Tom Jasny, VP of wireless broadband networks, including shorter time-to-market, greater throughput, low latency, greater broadcast capacity at 2Mbps per user, vehicular mobility at up to 75mph and broad global support, with more than 380 companies in the WiMAX Forum.
