Zoran Corp. has teamed with middleware provider Kestrelink Corp. to offer a wireless-connected DVD player platform with Wi-Fi capability, based on Zoran's Vaddis DVD multimedia processor and the KestrelMedia networking connectivity suite, the companies said Wednesday.

The new platform, compliant with Digital Living Network Alliance guidelines, was first demonstrated at the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this month in Las Vegas, according to Zoran.

The platform enables the creation of DVD products with the latest in audio and video playback support, including the display of digital photos and upscaling of video for viewing on HDTVs, the companies said. Content can be delivered from a variety of sources, including DVDs, CDs, USB thumb drives, flash cards, and sources on Ethernet or 802.11 wireless networks, according to the companies.

"The KestrelMedia platform was developed to deliver an optimized networking system to consumers for a best-in-class, robust Wi-Fi connectivity experience," said Mark Throndson, VP of marketing and business development for Kestrelink. "When coupled with mainstream DVD technology from Zoran, the complete solution enables OEMs to deliver new products at compelling price points for the end consumer."

The platform delivers excellent range and bandwidth for video streaming, as well as consistent fast response over the network connection, according to the companies.
