Soon in China: A Microsoft MSN R&D center?

The industry is abuzz with talks that Microsoft Corp. is putting up an R&D center in Shanghai for its MSN service. The company is expected to invest up to $20 million for the center, its 'first' located outside the United States.

The R&D center based in Shanghai's Zizhu Science Park will develop Internet software and will have a technical support team for Microsoft's MSN Messenger, market sources said.

"It's a clear signal that Microsoft won't give up its online MSN service in China even though it may have some problems in its local operations," said an unidentified source in a Reuters report.

Remarks another source, "The MSN R&D center in Shanghai is also part of Microsoft's efforts to become localized."

Sources also claimed that MSN China is partnering with Shanghai Media Group on online video and shopping business and said that the new MSN R&D center may develop software to provide technical support to the partnership.
