Panel shipments dropped 4 percent q-o-q while rising just 3 percent y-o-y in Q4 to 2.7 million units, reports DisplaySearch in its Quarterly PDP Module and TV Shipment and Forecast Report. Panel shipments were 15 percent lower than the suppliers' aggregate forecast and 9 percent below DisplaySearch's forecast.

According to the research firm, the decline can be due to the loss of share to LCD TVs at the Display Search added that the HDTV share jumped to 87 percent in Q4, up from 79 percent in Q3 and 51 percent in a year-ago period. From 1.1 percent in Q3, the 1080p segment rose to 1.3 percent in Q4 on 16 percent growth.

By supplier, Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd regained the top position and dominated the quarter with a 40 percent share, up from 30 percent on 27 percent unit growth. It ranked first in both TVs and public displays, and also led in three dominant sizes: 37inch, 42inch and 50inch. Matsushita also ranked first in HD and 1080p panels and became the 'first' plasma panel supplier to ship over 1 million panels in one quarter, according to Display Search.

Meanwhile, LG Electronics Inc. suffered a 36 percent decline in share after several of its major customers shifted their 42inch panel focus to LCD. Samsung SDI also experienced this situation, causing a double-digit decline in share. It ranked second behind Matsushita in the 42inch HD and 50inch sectors. Pioneer had the highest growth, up 73 percent, but remained fifth in terms of segment share.
