India's IC design services market is set to grow at over 20 percent per year through 2010, according to market research firm In-Stat.

According to the firm, design services revenue in India is likely to grow from $869 million in 2005 to $2.45 billion by 2010, the company said. Also, the number of Indian IC design engineers is set to increase from 12,352 in 2005 to 40,893 by 2010.

The cost advantages of India's well educated and skilled work force has compelled integrated device manufacturers to either outsource part of their design activities to third-party design firms in India, or set up their own operations in the country, In-Stat said.

However, manpower is likely to become major constraint on India design services growth. The industry is gearing up to meet this demand by fostering close ties with academia.

"Indian design companies will continue to move up the value chain by increasingly accomplishing the entire design instead of doing piecemeal design work," said Mayank Jain, an In-Stat analyst, in a statement.
