Allegro MicroSystems Inc. expands its family of stepper motor drivers with the launch of its A4983 DMOS microstepping motor driver with a built-in translator for easy operation in automation, industrial and medical markets.

The A4983 is designed to operate bipolar stepper motors in full-, half-, quarter-, eighth and 16th-step modes, with an output drive capacity of up to 35V and 2A. The microstepper motor driver includes a fixed off-time current regulator, which has the ability to operate in slow or mixed decay modes.

The translator is the key to the easy implementation of the A4983, said the company. Inputting one pulse on the STEP input drives the motor one microstep. There are no phase sequence tables, high frequency control lines or complex interfaces to program. The A4983 interface is suitable for applications where a complex microprocessor is unavailable or is overburdened.

In addition, the chopping control in the A4983 automatically selects the current decay mode (slow or mixed). The synchronous rectification control circuitry is provided to improve power dissipation during PWM operation. Internal circuit protection includes thermal shutdown with hysteresis, undervoltage lockout and crossover-current protection. Special power-on sequencing is not required.

The A4983 is supplied in a 5-by-5-by-0.9mm QFN package with an exposed thermal pad. The package is Pb-free with a 100 percent matte tin-plated leadframe. Pricing is $1.87 each in 1,000 units. Availability is 10-12 weeks.
