There is no news to report at the Colles2 Alliance in terms of new partnerships within the group, according to Joel Hartmann, director of the R&D chip-making organization.

This is both good and bad news. Good news is that there is some stability in the group after a tumultuous period. The bad news is, as reported, the group is searching for new partners to salvage the operation. And time is running out as the contract for the member companies is set to expire by year's end.

Recently, NXP Semiconductors said it would exit the organization by year's end. Freescale Semiconductor Inc. has joined IBM Corp.'s technology alliance, casting some doubts about Freescale's association with Crolles2.

The other members of Crolles2, STMicroelectronics Inc. (ST) and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd remained committed to the operation. However, ST recently dropped hints that it is exploring its options and may work with foundries.

At the International Solid-State Circuits Conference, Hartmann said that Freescale, NXP and ST are willing to fulfill their obligations until the end of this year. Beyond that, it's unclear what will happen to Crolles2if it can't find a new partner.
