There is no denying the fact that all eyes are on China these days. Apart from solidifying its status as the world's production base, China is setting its sight on becoming a design powerhouse.

Although there are still lots of work to be done, there has been remarkable progress especially last year in the communications and CE front. Results of the 2006 China Design Techniques Survey conducted by EE Times-China revealed that Bohai Sim region, the Pearl River Delta and the Yangtze River Delta comprise the epicenter of the country's electronics industry, with most of the engineers engaged in the design of CE, communications systems and industrial controls and security products.

To highlight the growing presence of China in the design arena, the 12th International IC China Conference and Exhibition (IIC-China) will zero in on local IC design houses as well as top global semiconductor companies. With more than 200 exhibitors parading an array of leading-edge technologies in over 900 booths, this year's IIC-China is shaping up to be the mainland's biggest IC and embedded systems conference and exhibition yet. It will take place in Shenzhen on March 5-6, will proceed to Beijing on March 8-9 and will culminate in Shanghai on March 13-14.

"IIC-China is increasingly becoming a focal point for the electronics industry in mainland China," said Mark Saunderson, president of the Global Sources-CMP Media joint venture that is organizing the event. "Last year, it allowed over 27,000 engineers to engage with leading semiconductor companies and their technologies."

Continues Saunderson, "IIC-China 2007, having already set new records of vendor participation, looks set to attract even more engineers, as we continue to include more value-added events."

Organizer is bracing for a bigger turnout of engineers at this year's show.

Apart from the staple serving of summits and vendor seminars, this year's IIC-China will feature local IC design houses in a special IC Design Pavilion. At the show's Shenzhen leg, a special Components Pavilion will highlight over 150 booths featuring active components, electromechanical components, electronic production equipment and supplies, interconnects, passive components, subassemblies and parts. These components drive product innovation and address the growing complexity of electronic design brought about by the ever-increasing demand for smaller and feature-rich applications.

Meanwhile, among the companies that will exhibit at IIC-China 2007 are Texas Instruments, Analog Devices, NXP, Renesas, STMicroelectronics, Freescale, NEC, Micron, Spansion and Qimonda.

"Leading technology providers recognize IIC-China as a premium channel through which to access this market," said Saunderson. "It gives them the opportunity to engage with engineers as they search for the latest technologies to drive their designs."
