Anadigics Inc. has announced the expansion of its HELP3 W-CDMA power amplifier (PA) line with a new dual-band design. The new device is designed for both US 3G handsets and world-phones. Through the integration of two independent PA chains, the tiny PA promises uncompromised performance in both frequency bands and conserves PCB area.

More talk time
Leveraging the company's proprietary HELP3 technology, the AWT6221 reduces average current consumption by 75 percent, which translates to up to 25 percent increase in talk-time. HELP3 PAs like AWT6221 use the company's exclusive InGaP-Plus technology, which integrates bipolar and FET devices on the same InGaP GaAs die. Through selectable bias modes, HELP3 devices achieve optimal efficiency across the low-range and midrange output power levels. The intelligent bias circuit of AWT6221 reduces current consumption to 8mA at low power levels, said to be the world's best.

"Anadigics has leveraged its extensive RF technology and design differentiation to deliver multiband 3G HSPA power amplifiers with best-in-class performance and size," said Ali Khatibzadeh, senior VP and general manager of wireless products at Anadigics. "The AWT6221 sets a new industry benchmark in performance and size for W-CDMA power amplifiers and extends Anadigics leadership in 3G RF PA market."

High integration
The AWT6221 dual-band PA offers high integration by combining North American cellular and PCS bands in a small 3-by-5mm package. As a result, using the HSDPA-compliant device saves 53 percent PCB space when compared with implementations using two single-band 4-by-4mm PAs. The chip includes built-in voltage regulator functionality, which eliminates the need for external switch circuitry.
