From 110MW, Sharp Corp. will double its existing production capacity for photovoltaic (PV) modules at Sharp Manufacturing Co. of U.K. (SUKM) to 220MW annually. The production base, located at Wrexham, North Wales, began operations in 2004 with an annual PV module capacity of 20MW. It expanded capacity to 50MW in May 2005, and then to 110MW in February 2006.

The German market is still the main demand driver for PV power systems in Europe. However, electricity buy-back guarantee programs have now been expanded to 20 countries, including Spain, Italy, Greece and France, where long hours of sunlight daily provide good PV power generating efficiency. Such installations have been growing rapidly, specifically in Southern Europe.
