Semiconductor design services in India will grow more than 20 percent year-on-year, according to market research firm In-Stat. IC design services revenue in the country will jump from $869 million in 2005 to $2.45 billion in 2010. The number of India design engineers will also expand, reaching 40,893 in 2010, up from 12,352 in 2005.

Cost advantages and a pool of skilled manpower have compelled integrated device manufacturers to either outsource part of their design activities to third-party design firms in India, or set up their own captive centers in the country.

"Indian design companies will continue to move up the value chain by increasingly accomplishing the entire design instead of doing piecemeal design work," said Mayank Jain, In-Stat analyst. "Captive centers of IDMs work on cutting-edge technologies and contribute to the development of products for a global audience."

At present, the India design industry is challenged by availability of manpower. To meet this demand, the industry is fostering close ties with the academia.
