Microsemi Corp. released an addition of a single-port gigabit PoE midspan power unit to its PowerDsine product portfolio. Designated the 3001G, this member of the PowerDsine 3000 midspan family eliminates the need for external power supplies at WLAN access points and other low-density networks having 10/100/1000 Base-T Ethernet-connected devices. It is compliant with the IEEE 802.3af PoE standard, provides remote power to either 802.3af-compliant or pre-standard devices. It measures 60-by-31mm.

The 3001G midspan unit includes an interlocking feature that allows users to scale WLAN deployments by linking together multiple one-port midspan units as new devices are added to the network. The PowerDsine 3001 generates safe power over standard Cat 5 cabling. By providing 48V, Ethernet terminals such as wireless LAN access points, IP phones and network cameras are powered remotely. An external splitter may be installed where a device is not standard compliant.

Product samples are currently available at $69.
