Touted for its low power consumption and support for mobile video, OLED displays for mobile phones and other lighting applications will hit $10.9 billion by 2012 and grow to $15.5 billion by 2014, according to the new report from NanoMarkets.

In the 'OLED Markets: 2007 & Beyond' report of NanoMarkets, the research firm noted that OLED displays are particularly well suited to the needs of mobile communications and computing because of their low power feature and mobile video support. NanoMarkets forecasts that revenues for OLED displays for mobile phones and handheld devices will reach $7.2 billion by 2014.

Meanwhile, OLED characteristics such as energy efficiency, high brightness, rapid video switching capability, lighter weight and suitability for use on flexible substrates, will spur a dramatic replacement cycle in the display industry, said NanoMarkets. The display industry is currently experiencing slow growth as LCD computer and TV display markets mature and economies of scale decline.

OLED displays are expected to capitalize too on emerging flexible substrate technology to create high-value products. Roll-up displays that can be plugged into mobile phones will increase display sizes suited for information access and video device. Flexible displays will also play a vital role in mobile computing as laptops must be light and slim, and detachable screens will enable those characteristics. Signage used in point-of-sale displays and kiosks is another significant application to watch.

In addition, NanoMarkets reports that OLEDs are beginning to find opportunities in the lighting business. Upcoming apps will include backlighting for LCD displays and consumer electronics, aviation lighting and mood lighting in restaurants and public buildings. Market for OLED-based lighting will exceed $1 billion by 2014.
