LCDs promise superior outdoor readability

TFT LCD maker BOE Hydis Technology Co. Ltd has developed notebook/tablet PC LCDs that promise superior outdoor readability compared with conventional LCDs.

The company's Advanced Fringe Field Switching wide-viewing angle technology, improved transmission and enhanced internal LCD panel reflection enables improved visibility in the new LCDs, even under bright sunlight. This development overcomes the outdoor readability shortcomings of existing TFT LCDs.

The improved outdoor readability is a result of the enhanced internal reflection achieved by placing the reflection area inside the cell. Thus, the stronger the outdoor light, the higher the internal reflection, enhancing readability.

Initial tests show that the new LCD reduces a device's power consumption by at least 40 percent. Other findings include a 25 percent increase in brightness by external light sources, reduction of surface reflection by 50 percent to under 0.3 percent, and transmission improvement to 8.75 percent.

The company plans to apply the new technology to its 10.4inch and 12.1inch LCDs, and to start mass production in Q4 2007.
