Cypress to keep U.S. 200mm fab

Cypress Semiconductor clarifies its current position on its fab strategy, saying it continues to invest in a 200mm fab in Minnesota, United States, while "exploring options" for an older 150mm fab in Texas, also in the United States.
Last week, Cypress was reported to be considering selling its U.S. fabs while signing up with United Microelectronics Co. of Taiwan to produce advanced SRAM chips. The chipmaker said March 2 in a statement responding to the report that it has no plans to sell its Minnesota fab.
"All companies continually review their asset portfolio," Shahin Sharifzadeh, executive vice president of manufacturing and technology at Cypress, said in the statement. "In our case, we are exploring options related to our older, 150mm facility in Round Rock, Texas. However, we continue to invest in our state-of-the-art, 200mm wafer fab in Bloomington, Minnesota."
Sharifzadeh added, "The Minnesota fab is an important strategic asset and a large part of our future. We have no plans to sell it."
