STV0900 DVB-S2 satellite TV demodulator from ST

STMicroelectronics has announced a dual DVB-S2 satellite TV demodulator chip for STBs that allows the viewer to watch a standard or HDTV channel while recording another. The new STV0900 promises to reduce STB complexity and manufacturing cost by providing the functionalities of two of ST's STB0899 demodulators in a single package.

90nm tech
Built using 90nm process technology, the STV0900 ensures lower cost through increased integration, while reducing power consumption and increasing design flexibility. In addition, the built-in software-based power management features help STB manufacturers obtain green accreditation.

Like the STB0899 demodulator, the STV0900's dual-standard capability enables STB manufacturers to use the STB0899 and the STV0900 in "DVB-S2-ready" STBs to provide a seamless upgrade path for viewers. Both products support normal QPSK and 8PSK modulation, as well as the DVB-S2 pilot processing that enables robust reception.

More satellite link capacity
DVB-S2 increases the capacity of satellite communications links by 30 percent compared to the DVB-S standard and in combination with other new coding and satellite technologies enables the deployment of high data-rate applications such as HDTV, broadband Internet and interactive services, as well as an increase in the number of standard channels that can be broadcast in a conventional transponder.

The dual demodulator integrates with silicon tuners such as ST's STB6100, which replaces traditional tuner circuitry. For downstream processing, it offers cost-saving glueless interfaces to the broad range of MPEG-2 and H.264/VC-1 decoders in ST's standard and HD OMEGA decoder family. Software drivers and reference designs with full documentation are also provided as part of the development environment.

DiSEqC interface
Support is included for two Digital Satellite Equipment Control (DiSEqC 2.0) interfaces that allow a satellite STB to control peripheral devices connected to the coaxial cable. Extensions to the DiSEqC open standard enable the STB to manage the rooftop Low Noise Block and simplify installations needing to handle more than one user channel. Up to eight user channels can be combined onto a single coaxial cable eliminating the need for multiple cables or multicore cables.

Priced at less than $10 in 100,000-unit volumes, the STV0900 kit with tuners is packaged in a 128-pin exposed pad LQFP, 14-by-14mm QFP, with 0.4mm pitch. Volume production is planned for 1H 2007.
