Companies prep for China mobile TV standard

Although the China mobile TV standard remains undecided and mobile TV commercial application faces various challenges, the 12th Annual International IC-China Conference & Exhibition (IIC-China) had several chip products targeting mobile TV applications.

South Korean mobile TV chip vendors seem to have their eyes on China's huge market since its homegrown terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting's (DMB solution'" target=_blank>T-DMB) revenues have not been very satisfactory. In the South Korea show zone, NeXilion Inc. and Pnpnetwork Technologies displayed their mobile TV baseband SoCs and demodulator products.

NeXilion showcased its NX3K family of integrated demodulator and decoder SoCs that supports DMB/DAB/ISDB-T/DVB-H and Stimi, the coming China Broadcasting and Television standard. However, NX3K supports H.264 decoding standard rather than China AVS standard.

Pnpnetwork, on the other hand, has a different strategy. Zhao Zheng-Wen, an engineer from Pnpnetwork, said that since China still has not decided on its national mobile TV standard, they will focus on the T-DMB and DVB-H standards instead. Pnpnetwork's PNM3030 is suitable for T-DMB and DAB receiver, while the PNM3031E is designed for ISDB-T receiver.

For companies targeting the China market, supporting a local standard is important. With the coming of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, it is believed that China's mobile TV standard will soon be launched.
