When Fujitsu Computer Products exited the desktop HDD market in 2001, the firm began concentrating on developing hard drives for the laptop market. The firm this week announced a laptop drive that features desktop-type specs of 160Gbytes and 7200rpm speeds.
The 2.5-inch drive is the third product line using perpendicular magnetic recording, Fujitsu said. The drive will begin shipping to computer makers in Q2.
"Fujitsu has positioned itself well to capitalize on the growing demand for higher performance with 7200rpm laptop HDDs that replace the functionality found traditionally on desktop PCs," said Joel Hagberg, VP of marketing and business development at the Fujitsu unit, in a statement. "Since we exited the desktop HDD market in August 2001, we have focused on building desktop functionality and performance into rugged mobile products."
The firm, which said the drive is the industry's first hard drive with a SATA 3Gbyte/interface, is aimed at graphics intensive video and audio applications.
