Tensilica Inc.'s Xtensa LX processor with HiFi 2 Audio Engine has been selected by Enuclia Semiconductor for its next-generation flat-panel TV ICs. Enuclia aims to develop chips that can deliver the 'best' picture on analog and digital TVs whether they are displaying standard or high-definition content.

The HiFi 2 Audio Engine is said to provide a new, fully-optimized approach to embed multiple audio standards into SoC designs. It is available as an add-on option to the Xtensa LX processor in the format Xtensa HiFi 2 Audio Engine.

The solution maintains full 24bit resolution throughout, providing better audio quality over 16bit solutions, said Tensilica. Steve Roddy, the company's VP of marketing, said that this capacity will "enable Enuclia to combine optimal quality video and audio together in a cost-effective solution."

Enuclia CEO Chip Burczak said that using the HiFi 2 Audio Engine will enable them to produce chips that can deliver exceptional audio quality. "We were impressed with the HiFi 2 Audio Engine because of its small size and the ability to run codecs more efficiently than competing solutions." For high-performance applications, the solution can support speeds above 280MHz in TSMC 0.13m LV process, according to Tensilica.

Tensilica is exhibiting its configurable Xtensa processors at the ongoing 12th International IC China Conference and Exhibition (IIC-China) alongside its Diamond standard processors.
