While many are still confused with the concept of MP4s and portable medial players (PMPs), the 12th Annual International IC-China Conference & Exhibition (IIC-China) showcased a new player in the marketMP5.

One technical bottleneck in MP4s and PMPs is the support of stream media format such as Real RM/RMVB. The MP5-P881, a fifth-generation PMP from Aigo (Beijing Huaqi), was able to solve this problem with the use of Freescale Semiconductor's i.MX31 processor.

The processor, based on ARM11 platform and the company's Smart Speed enhancement technology, supports MPEG-4 and H.263 codec with 6/18-bit color LCD controller and VGA support. With the i.MX31 platform, the MP5-P881 PMP was able to deliver a 4.3inch high-resolution LCD panel, 720 x 480 resolution and 19:9 wide screen display.

Freescale is reportedly putting all efforts in developing products for smart handset design. Aside from the i.MX31 platform, the company's MC13783 power management chip has already started shipment. The chip includes an audio system, a battery charger system, a backlight system, five switch regulators, 18 linear regulators, a USB transceiver, an in-car hands free device interface and a touch panel interface.
