Mark Saunderson congratulates a winner at the first China ACE Awards.

China had its first Annual Creativity in Electronics (ACE) Awards this month, celebrating the creators of technology and how they impact the industry.

Texas Instruments (TI), NXP Semiconductors and Apexone Microelectronics bagged the top company awards at the first China ACE Awards sponsored by EE Times-China.

From the flock of finalists composed of Analog Devices, Freescale Semiconductor, NXP and Xilinx, TI was awarded Best Brand of the Year. It also won three other awardsBest Product of the Year for the categories AD/DA converter ICs, MCUs and processors, and DSPs.

"This is big honor for TI in a very important market," said Jeff Smith, TI's marketing director for China. "It reflects the dedication of our growing workforce here."

Apexone grabbed the Startup of the Year title from other finalists such as Analogix Semiconductor, Montage Technology, Shanghai Jade Technologies and Teralane Semiconductor.

Meanwhile, NXP took the Outstanding Services of the Year, beating Analog Devices Inc. (ADI), Microchip Technology, STMicroelectronics and TI.

Tektronix took the Editor's Choice Award for the most significant semiconductor technology of 2006, the RSA6100A series real-time spectrum analyzer.

Awards for Best Product of the Year in 10 categories were also presented. These awards were given to technologies that had the most impact on mainland China's electronics market in the last 12 months. An online voting system was used to determine the winners for these categories.

ADI's AD7980 and TI's ADS1232 were the winners in the A/D and D/A converters category. The award for the amplifiers category were given to ADI's AD8250 and National Semiconductor's LM4562.

The winners for the best Interface ICs were Analogix's ANX9021/ANX9011 and National Semiconductor's SCAN25100. Meanwhile, Altera's Stratix II GX FPGAs and Xilinx's Virtex-5 65nm FPGA were awarded Product of the Year for the logic and programmable logic category.

Freescale with its MC9RS08KA and TI with its MSP430F20xx won in the microcontrollers category while Cypress Semiconductor with its nvSRAM and Freescale's MRAM topped the memory products category.

For power solutions, Linear Technology and ON Semiconductor grabbed the top awards with their LTM4600 and NCP1337 products, respectively. Meanwhile, ADI and TI each received awards for the processors and DSPs category for their SoftFone-LCR chipset and TMS320DM644x, respectively.

Freescale's RFX300-20 and RDA Microelectronics' TD-SCDMA/GSM/GPRS RF IC were awarded best products for the RF and microwave category, while Agilent Technologies' 16800 series portable logic analyzers and National Instruments' LabView 8.20 grabbed the top awards for test and measurement solutions.

"Engineers in China are under tremendous pressure. Their need for innovative new technologies and solutions has never been greater than it is now," said Mark Saunderson, president of Electronics Business Unit, Global Sources. "We honor the technology providers who provide them with those solutions. It is their pursuit of excellence that is helping to establish China as a leading center of electronics innovation."
