Alps Electric has developed a magnetic sensor that detects the opening and closing of folding mechanisms including the covers of mobile phones and notebook computers, as well as doors and lids of white goods such as refrigerators and washing machines.

This switching output-type device, designated the HGD series, uses a magnetic sensor with "highly reliable magnetic elements," which can sense over a wider area and with higher reliability compared to other magnetic elements, according to Alps. In addition, it maintains high signal output in comparison with other magnetic elements. As a result, the HGD series-mounted signal processing circuit can be restricted to an absolute minimum, contributing to reduced current consumption and the effective use of space, said the company.

The HGD series is available in two types of packages&mdahs;the Mold Array Package (MAP) and Small Outline Nonleaded (SON). The MAP type, which measures 1.1-by-0.9-by-0.55mm, features terminals positioned on the reverse side of the component, while the SON type, measuring 2.1-by-2.1-by-0.75mm, has terminals that extend from the side of the component for easier mounting. Average current consumption is rated at 2?A.

Samples will be available this month at $3. Volume production is planned for October 2007.
