Phihong USA has developed a low-cost, 8-port midspan for security and SOHO installations. Fully compliant with the IEEE802.3af standard in detection, disconnect and voltage control, the Gigabit-compatible PoE midspan provides full power to all eight ports.

The 8-port midspan provides backup power to phones and security cameras in an entire office, using a single UPS. By allowing full power on every port, the PoE midspan eliminates the need for installers to check datasheets and calculate how many devices to connect, said the company. It's suitable for powering a variety of applications including security systems, VoIP applications in small offices and access points for large public places such as an airport terminal or library.

The 8-port midspan, which measures 7.8-by-8.9-by-1.75 inches, features both connection and diagnostic indicators, and can be stacked on a switch or rack-mounted. It supports Cisco legacy IP phones and access points with no additional dongles or wire swappers required.

The 8-port midspan is priced at $195 each. It will be available Q2 2007. Samples are available for OEMs today.
