IC makes its way in CE, automotive apps

The latest applications exhibited at the 12th Annual International IC-China Conference & Exhibition (IIC-China) showed the progress IC technology has made in major application fields such as consumer and automotive electronics and industrial control.

During IIC-China, Renesas launched its Tiny series of motor control MCUs that are designed for use in servo-actuators. The M16C/28 MCU enables motor FOC control and related automatic control, ensures the system EMC features, and implements complex vector control functions.

Meanwhile, Microchip exhibited its motor control solution, including an 8bit PIC single chip machine and a 16bit dsPIC digital signal controller, both equipped with on-chip peripherals. On-chip peripherals include high-speed 10bit ADC, 12bit 200Ksps ADC and durable EEPROM, dedicated motor control PWM, up to eight channels and four duty ratio generator.

Fairchild also showcased its motor control solution, SPM, which promises the highest power efficiency, compactness and low EMI level required in frequency conversion motor driving application. According to Fairchild, the SMPS design (4W-1,500W) satisfies low standby power consumption requirements, simplifies design, and reduces EMI radiation and system cost. In addition, said the company, its super portable solution can help system designers deal with the challenges in miniaturization, function convergence and power efficiency needed by space-constrained applications.

Convergence of technologies
With the rising demand for consumer, medical and industrial electronics, the scope of sensor applications has become much broader.

Silicon Laboratories demonstrated Direct Sensor Interface Technology (DSiT), which enables designers to take an unconditioned, uncompensated, raw output signal from a sensor and interface it directly into a single-chip solution.

Another sensor chip supplier, Fortune Semiconductor Corp., showcased its FS52x, a single chip digital sensor (strain gauge) IC. This device is designed for electronic scales, electronic blood pressure meters and tire pressure monitoring systems.

Monitor and measurement
Due to the increasing adoption of wireless technologies, wireless meter reading solutions also took the spotlight at the recent IIC-China. Both Lierda and South Korea's Radio Pulse exhibited their respective wireless meter reading solution.
