Virage Logic Corp. has introduced a version of Novea, its non-volatile memory core, which can enable a new class of chips for consumer, RFID and other embedded applications requiring security and digital rights management capabilities. The core will occupy 50 percent less space and consume 30 percent less power than previous versions.

"Our next-generation Novea product provides significant area and power savings, enabling our customers to deploy more-competitive and diverse end applications," said Pat Lasserre, director of marketing for Novea products at Virage Logic. The core is designed for use in products such as flash memory cards, DVD players and recorders, STBs and RFID tags, Lasserre said.

The product expands the Novea memory's density to 16Kbit, allowing EEPROM replacement in many applications, Virage said. One-time-programmable (OTP) applications like programmable fuses, device ID or device options can also use the IP core. And unlike OTP solutions, Novea is said to provide full verification at test. The IP core is reprogrammable in-system up to 100,000 times and has specified endurance for 10 years at 125?C.

New apps
Like previous Novea releases, this latest version can be made in a standard CMOS process. It is optimized for 130nm and 90nm embedded chips. Among the newer applications for the IP core are Blu-ray Disc players and Zigbee-enabled wireless systems, Lasserre said.

The IP core will be initially available at silicon foundry giant Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. The new-generation Novea product is available today. Pricing varies depending on the process node.
