Laser delivers 15mW output for FTTH GPON

Oki Electric Industry Co. Ltd has developed a 1490nm wavelength semiconductor laser that can transmit up to 2.5Gbps at an output level of 15mW, which is said to be the industry's highest level over a temperature range of -40C to 85C. The OL4636L-ET semiconductor laser is suitable for use in outdoor fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) Gigabit passive optical networking (GPON) equipment.

According to Oki, while GbE passive optical networking (GE-PON) technology for FTTH with a downstream data rate of 1.25Gbps is spreading rapidly in Japan and Korea, GPON with a transmission speed of 2.5Gbps is being widely accepted in North America.

The company already offers a 1490nm lasers for GE-PON with a 15mW output and a temperature range of 5 to 70C. Oki is also developing a product that can transmit data up to 2.5Gbps with a 10mW optical output over a temperature range of -40 to 95C. Expected release is July 2007.

Samples of OL4636L-ET will be available by mid-May 2007.
