16-channel LED driver features error diagnostics

austriamicrosystems has introduced the AS1110, a 16-channel, constant-current LED driver with error diagnostics for open and shorted LEDs. The AS1110 uses serial data I/O lines for error information readback so no additional PCB tracks are needed for LED error diagnostics.

The AS1110 features 16 regulated ports that provide constant current for driving LEDs within a wide range of forward voltage variations. Its output ports are said to endure 15V maximum voltage. Through an external resistor, the currents can be adjusted from 0.5mA to 100mA, which gives flexibility in controlling LED brightness. With an accuracy of 3 percent between channels, the new device improves picture quality of LED displays as it eliminates intensity variations between LEDs and LED modules.

Multiplexed mode
Similar to the AS1109, the AS1110 can be used in multiplexed mode, which means a single device can drive up to 64 independent LED nodes and still maintain the functionality of error detection.

The easy-to-use built-in LED error detector can be invoked during normal operation without switching into a separate detection mode. This makes the software interface user-friendly and detection fast. The AS1110 can detect any open- or shortcircuit as well as over-temperature occurrence. For immediate detection of those errors, a global error flag is available at the serial data output. Furthermore, a detailed error report can be produced with the exact position of the broken LED.

In order to avoid the flickering of LED displays during error detection, the company has introduced the low-current diagnostic mode. In this mode, a small test current of only 0.6mA is applied to the display for a very short time, making LED testing invisible.

"As the resolution of LED displays increases, the market is demanding more accurate LED drivers in smaller packages. Additionally, LED error detection is becoming an important factor, not only for security-related applications like traffic lights, but also for commercial applications such as information displays or video walls, in order to optimize maintenance costs," said Walter Moshammer, director for marketing standard linear, austriamicrosystems. "Housed in a small package and offering high performance, as well as accuracy with LED error detection, the AS1110 addresses these market demands."

Industrial, outdoor apps
The 30MHz serial interface ensures refreshing rates even for huge LED display modules. With an operating temperature range from -40C to 85C, the AS1110 is also suitable for industrial and outdoor applications.

The AS1110 is available in a 24-pin SSOP-150 and a 5-by-5mm 28-pin QFN package, allowing a small pitch between LED pixels and making the device suitable for indoor LED displays.
