Intersil Corp. has launched the ISL8502, a 2.5A, wide input voltage synchronous buck regulator that reduces noise and EMI filter requirements through programmable switching frequency and external synchronization. The integrated switching MOSFETs and a thermally enhanced compact 4-by-4mm QFN package make this device suitable for 5V/12Vin space-critical applications.

The ISL8502 features external synchronization capability with master/slave configuration to enable the user to synchronize up to four ICs out of phase and reduce EMI in the design while also providing multiple outputs from the same input rail. The device's adjustable switching frequency range of 500kHz to 1.2MHz ensures high efficiency and a smaller number of external BOM components. External compensation provides additional flexibility and enables various choices of passive devices.

Target applications for the ISL8502 include POL applications, STBs, ADSL modems, switches, routers, graphics cards, FPGA power, ASICs and memory power supplies. The device is available in a 24-lead QFN package and is priced at $2.21 each in 1,000-unit quantities.
