Type B Micro-USB connector from SMK

SMK Corp. has announced the development of new Type B Micro-USB connectors that promise 60 percent less volume compared to the company's previous line.

According to SMK, these devices are suitable for applications requiring Hi-Speed USB 2.0 (480Mbps) transfers and charging functions, such as mobile phones, digital cameras, PDAs and portable music players. Operating life of receptacles and plugs extend to as many as 10,000 cycles. The devices come in three receptacle designs: normal, reverse and mid-mounted.

These RoHS-compliant connectors are rated at 1.8A (power) or 1A (signal) and 30Vrms AC. They feature a contact resistance of 30 milliohms and can withstand 35N insertion force and 8N removal force.

The connectors will be available in May 2007. SMK is a member of the USB Implementers Forum.
