The Investment Commission under the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) approved on March 20 the application of TSMC to step up production at Shanghai fab" target=_blank>Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) to use 0.18?m manufacturing technology at its wafer foundry in China.

Its approval marked the first investment project permitted by MOEA since the government allowed Taiwan IC manufacturers to move 0.18?m chip manufacturing technology to China in December 2006.

Upon the approval, TSMC will upgrade the manufacturing technology of its 8inch wafer foundry in Shanghai from 0.25?m to 0.18?m processing technology.

Besides TSMC's, ProMOS Technologies Co. also filed a similar application with the Investment Commission last year regarding its plan to relocate its 8inch wafer plant using the 0.25?m technology to China.
