Hitachi Ltd. announced March 20 its plans to sell the world's first high-definition TVs (HDTV) with removable hard drives, according to a Reuters report.

Company executives said that users can expand HD recording capacity with the new hard drives and hopes the feature will boost sales and keep steep price falls at bay.

Hitachi will equip plasma TVs and LCD TVs with 250Gbyte internal hard drives and removable 80Gbyte or 160Gbyte drives starting April 20 in Japan. The company targets to market the HDTVs overseas in two years' time, the report said.

If prices drop in the future, removable drives could eliminate the need for HD DVD and Blu-ray DVDs for HD recording. Hitachi, however, will keep producing DVD players, said Masanori Yoshino, general manager of Hitachi's planning and marketing division. "Hard drives are a very different medium from optical disks and we will study both," he said.
