IC Microsystems Sdn. Bhd., a Malaysian fabless mixed-signal and RFIC vendor, is planning to set up a design center in the U.K. as well as in the U.S, according to Business Daily.

IC Microsystems, known as ICmic, has teamed up with Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL), Malaysian government enterprise agency MARA and CAD specialist Silvaco International Inc. to create a training academy. The academy, located in Cyberjaya, Malaysia is expected to train 450 engineers over the next five years. Of these about 20 percent are expected to become entrepreneurs creating employment not only in Malaysia but also at global electronics market.

As part of the coalition, ICmic is being supported to set up development centers in key areas around the world, including Silicon Valley and the greater Cambridge area, the Business Daily reported. Silvaco, which is a 40 percent shareholder in ICmic, is hosting both the Silicon Fen and Silicon Valley operations in its local offices.

ICmic in St. Ives, England, is due to be operational by the first quarter of 2008 with an initial staff of four, the report said referencing an ICmic spokesman as its source. The medium term objective is to employ more than 20 full-time design engineers.

The St Ives and Silicon Valley centers are to be made available to other Malaysian companies and entrepreneurs as a point of entry into the European and U.S. markets respectively, the report said. For example, engineering students from the academy could visit to work in a commercial environment in both the U.K. and the U.S.

ICmic is also attempting to identify potential acquisitions in the Cambridge area, the report said.
