Broadcom urges import ban on phones with Qualcomm chips

Keywords:Broadcom? IC patent infringement? Qualcomm?

Broadcom Corp. argued for an import ban on certain cellphones utilizing its battery-saving technology, according to a Reuters report. However, some members of the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) are pondering if that might crimp competition and harm consumers.

Broadcom wants a ban on imports of cellphones that use computer ICs made by rival Qualcomm Inc.

In October, an ITC administrative judge concluded that Qualcomm had infringed a Broadcom patent, but stopped short of a ban on U.S. sales of cellphones with Qualcomm chips.

At a public meeting this week, the six commissioners of ITC heard suggestions on what the proper punishment should be. The commissioners said they wanted to balance Broadcom's patent rights with any disruption that a ban would cause before they issue an agency decision by May 8.
