ARC International has inked licensing agreements with several semiconductor companies in Asia who will use its configurable processor IP in SoCs targeted at applications such as multimedia devices VoIP phones and flash memory devices.

ARC of Elstree, England is on a roll in Asia where last year it boosted significantly the number of license agreements that led to a record 239 percent increase in revenue from customers in the region. South Korean group AD Technology will use the configurable ARC 750D core with associated voice codecs to drive the company's Power Line Communications (PLC) SoC. The PLC chip will provide Internet, phone and other communications services for a project initiated by the South Korean government and the Korean Electricity & Power Research Institute (KEPR).

The groups expect commercialization of broadband PLC to start this year, following field tests in almost 1,500 households over the past year using 24Mbps and 50Mbps PLC systems.

Taiwanese fabless company Crystal Media will also use the 750D core in the development of Internet phone SoCs. Crystal Media is an affiliate of semiconductor foundry UMC and was founded in 2004.

Meanwhile, Fullhan Microelectronics will be ARC's first publicly announced customer in China. It develops and makes H.264 video codecs and chips and has taken a license for the configurable ARC 625D core to create SoCs for a range of consumer electronics devices including broadband IP STBs, mobile TV solutions, HD DVD, Blu-ray DVD, DTV and digital security surveillance products.

Another Taiwanese group, Phison Electronics Corporation, has adopted the 605 core for its next-generation flash NAND drives.
