South Korea mobile service operator SK Telecom Co. said it will extend its 3G mobile communications service nationwide this week, according to report from

The company said it will commence the nationwide service in South Korea of high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) to enable customers to use video telephony based on an enhanced data processing speed.

"We have now secured a world-class communications network by building both CDMA and HSDPA across the nation," SK Telecom said in a press release.

The company started the HSDPA service in May 2006, the first in the world, but its coverage was restricted to 84 major cities, the report said.

SK Telecom's coverage expansion comes just a few weeks after KTF Co. kicked off its full-fledged service of HSDPA earlier this month, igniting a renewed competition between the two rivals.

The company did not unveil mobile phone models exclusively for HSDPA customers, though there are six available handsets that can support both CDMA and HSDPA services. SK Telecom said it will introduce 20 HSDPA-only phones by the end of this year, including six in May.
