NEC flat panels draw power from solar battery

NEC Display Solutions is offering a solar-powered system that will support all of the company's flat-panel LCD monitors.

The system, which the supplier called the first of its kind from a display vendor, was developed with renewable-source specialist Carmanah Technologies. It was designed to provide about 293kW-hr per year, or 800W-hr per day, with actual energy output and power at any given time dependent upon solar cell placement, the amount of sunlight and the display type in use. In a practical application, a typical LCD monitor will run for days.

The solar-power package includes a 2 x EV-120, Evergreen 120W solar panel; 3 x EX-1000, Extreme 12V, deep-cycle solar battery, 100A-h; 1 x GPR-25, Go Power! 25A digital charge controller; 1 x GP-SW150-12 Go Power! pure sine wave 150W, 12V inverter; 1 x GPSC-12-10A Go Power! 10A smart-battery charger; and miscellaneous hardware.

The system batteries have a life expectancy of more than 20 years, depending on the number of cycle times, and the solar panels have a life of at least 50 years, a company spokesman said. All NEC LCDs are RoHS-compliant, containing fully disposable plastics.

The system is priced at about $2,000.
