Switch muscles up for 10GbE tasks

World Wide Packets Inc., which pioneered carrier-based Ethernet for the enterprise, has launched a chassis-sized service aggregation switch. The LightningEdge 3300 is the company's first switch to support 10Gbps Ethernet links, and the first to combine resiliency and redundancy features to allow true service aggregation for complex Metro Ethernet Forum functions such as Ethernet private line and private LAN.

The company will simultaneously release ver 5.0 of its element-manager software. The Ethernet Services Manager now handles the three layers of service switching offered in WWP's hardware.

Chief executive Dave Curry said that pizza-box aggregation was sufficient when WWP was marketing to enterprises, real-estate managers and municipal districts offering broadband. But European deals with KTN and NTL propelled the company into the heart of telco and cable-TV multisystem operator networks, which require a larger switch for central offices, headends and points of presence (POPs).

The company applied its ResilientStream and StreamCast QoS software to the larger system, and it added flexible hardware resiliency so that any I/O card can be used in any slot. WWP's hierarchical QoS uses multiple layers of metering and traffic shaping so that the aggregation switch can support service-level agreements between carriers.

The system uses two types of operations, administration and maintenance information: 802.3ah for physical topology verification and 802.1ag for service verification.

The switch can be used for wireless backhaul, aggregation of fiber-to-the-node or fiber-to-the-home access, L2 virtual private network aggregation or L2 backhaul of L3 VPNs. In many cases, the switch can be used as an augmentation for Internet Protocol-based DSL access multiplexers. It would rarely compete directly with DSLAMs, Curry said.

LightningEdge 3300 links POPs with Ethernet. Switch aggregates multiple traffic types.

WWP is supporting the Nortel Networks-promoted Provider Backbone Transport (PBT), but also supports multiprotocol label switching in the backbone and a variety of other transport options. In the first switch release, the 802.1Q/802.1ad provider bridge with dual-tag translation will be offered. Later this year, PBT and 802.1ah provider edge bridge transport will be added, with virtual private LAN service due in the third release.
