LG.Philips LCD has started full-scale mass production at its back-end LCD module plant in Poland on Mar. 30.

Located in Kobierzyce, the plant will produce LCD modules mainly for 32-inch and larger LCD TVs. LG.Philips plans to expand the annual production capacity of the plant from the initial 3 million units to 11 million units by 2011.

The company said starting mass production in Poland will help continue building lasting strategic alliances with client and partner firms operating or building factories near its new module plant. In addition, with major partners producing components and materials for LCD modules nearby, LG.Philips LCD's module plant is expected to be a critical part of a highly-efficient local production system for LCD products.

Many of LG.Philips LCD's customers and partner firms have already built or are building facilities in the region. LG Electronics currently operates an LCD TV plant nearby and Toshiba, which has a 19.9 percent equity stake in LG.Philips LCD's Poland plant, is constructing an LCD TV plant in the vicinity, with production scheduled to start in August 2007. Philips and Matsushita also have TV plants in Hungary and the Czech Republic.

"The start of mass production and the establishment of a base in Poland have enabled LG.Philips LCD to secure a strong foundation for mutual growth with our customers in the fast-growing European LCD TV market," said Young Soo Kwon, president and CEO of LG.Philips LCD. "We were able to move quickly to meet our customers' needs in Europe, opening this plant only nine months after construction began. Through local production we plan to provide services tailored to the needs of our customers, offering a timely and stable supply of optimized products and services."

According to a DisplaySearch report released in March, Europe showed the largest demand for LCD TVs in 2006, accounting for a 39.3 percent share of the worldwide LCD TV market on a unit basis. The market is projected to grow to 35.8 million units by 2010.
