To facilitate the commercialization of China's TD-SCDMA 3G mobile technology, SK Telecom Co. has opened a new test bed center, the Access Research Center in Bundang, southeast of Seoul.

In August 2006, SK Telecom signed an agreement with the National Development and Reform Commission of China, under which the company will help China develop its own TD-SCDMA technology. Last February, both SK Telecom and the government of China set up a joint R&D center in Beijing, China.

Based on a report from the Korea Herald, SK Telecom's new test bed center in Seoul will cooperate with the R&D center in Beijing to commercialize and expand TD-SCDMA in China.

Citing figures from Gartner, SK Telecom said that China will invest up to $10 billion in the next four years for its homegrown 3G technology. The company added that Korean handset makers and solution providers will benefit from this 3G development project when they venture into China. Last year, SK Telecom bought $1 billion of bonds that can be converted into a 6.7 percent stake of China Unicom Ltd.

Along with China Unicom, SK Telecom is currently offering trial runs of TD-SCDMA in five cities in China including Beijing, Shanghai, Baoding, Qingdao and Amoy. This year, SK Telecom plans to expand the trial service to five more cities including Tianjin, Qinghuangdao, Shenyang, Guangzhou and Shenzen.
