Lenovo Mobile Communication Technology Ltd has chosen NXP Semiconductors' EDGE solution for the design of its first EDGE mobile handset.

Using NXP's Nexperia cellular system solution 5210, the mobile handset is designed around consumers' demands to offer optimized and applied functions cost effectively, helping end users' transition from 2G to 3G mobile technology.

The Nexperia cellular system solution 5210 is a second-generation product of the EDGE platform, following the Nexperia cellular system solution 6120. The GSM/GPRS/EDGE platform combines software and hardware designs, providing optimized multimedia performance without requiring an external coprocessor and reducing BoM. The solution also enables handset OEMs to accelerate time-to-market and develop cost-effective EDGE mobile handsets with more advanced features and stronger power management.

Lenovo Mobile disclosed that its EDGE handset is targeted for large-scale production in China.

"China's mobile handset market is at an important growth stage," comments Eric Zhao, senior director, Lenovo Mobile's product department division. By introducing its EDGE mobile handset in the local market, Lenovo Mobile eyes to further gain inroads in China's 400 million mobile phone subscribers.
